W2022ENGL307: Response Paper Question
See the course outline for format, quotation requirements, length, and other details.
Salman Rushdie has said about Midnight’s Children that “children don’t come naked into the world, they come burdened with the accumulated history of their family and their world.”1
Book One of this novel can be interpreted as the narrator’s origin story. How is Saleem defined by his family, his nation, and the array of other circumstances surrounding his birth and early life? Which aspects of Saleem’s later life in Books Two and Three emerge from those origins?
Address these questions, and analyze how qualities of Saleem’s character and narrative voice shift throughout the novel, using one or two quotations from each of Rushdie’s three Books — to a recommended maximum of five quotations.
